First Spouse Coin Sales Figures logoThis week, two Proof versions of First Spouse Gold Coins were hot sellers in the series. Sarah Polk and Julia Tyler Proofs jumped by 339 and 218, respectively. Their uncirculated options didn’t do bad either. Polk’s climbed by 164 and Julia Tyler’s uncirculated picked up 139.

The figures show demand higher for five of ten First Lady coins when compared to the prior week. Performing marginally better were Van Buren’s Liberty and Letitia Tyler proofs. The former increased by 99 from 87 and the latter improved by 79 from 78.

As predicted on CoinNews, First Spouse Gold Coin prices increased today, since gold’s London Fix average rose over $1,000 an ounce for the past week. According to the Mint’s website, Proof and Uncirculated’s prices are $679 and $665.75, respectively.

First Spouse Coin Sales Figures logoIt’s no surprise the newly offered Sarah Polk coins were again the best sellers of the First Spouse Gold Coin series. The proof and uncirculated options rose by 216 and 463, bringing the totals to 1,137 and 2,147 respectively.

Overall, however, First Spouse Coin sales mostly declined compared to the prior report, with only two of the ten U.S. Mint gold commemoratives showing improvements. The Letitia Tyler First Spouse uncirculated coin rose by 75 compared to the prior weekly gain of 65. Van Buren’s Liberty uncirculated climbed by 74 compared to last week’s 71.

As something to keep in mind, with gold’s recent rise above $1,000 an ounce, a new threshold in the Mint’s pricing policy has been touched. Should gold prices average above $1,000 between Thursday and next Wednesday, First Spouse Gold Coin prices will increase by $25. The last price increase happened on September 2nd, when gold moved above $950 an ounce.

First Spouse Coin Sales Figures logoSarah Polk First Spouse Coin sales began Thursday afternoon, and in only a few days, it was the most popular spouse coin for the week. Sarah Polk’s proof version reached 1,684 and the uncirculated made it to 921.

The price of gold has been at its highest level since Feb. 20th, and that may have some effect on First Spouse Coin sales. All but one of the First Spouse coins performed better than last week. Julia Tyler’s proof steadily increased the most, this time by 230 compared to 217 last week. The only exception was Julia Tyler’s uncirculated version, which sold 105 units compared to 133 last week.

Van Buren’s Liberty First Spouse Coin is the final 2008 coin still being sold by the U.S. Mint. It’s hard to predict whether it will perform as well as the other 2008 coins before its sales are stopped. Right now the proofs are standing at 6,659 and the uncirculated at 3,723.

First Spouse Coin Sales Figures logo The First Spouse Coin news of the week is the sell out of Jackson’s Liberty proof coin. The US Mint unexpectedly placed the gold piece in its "sold out" category, although the uncirculated option is still available to buy.

Most who follow the series were expecting the US Mint to stop selling both coins on the morning of Sept. 3, which is the day Sarah Polk First Spouse Coins are released.

The latest proof and uncirculated sales tallies for each coin are 7,806 and 4,493, respectively. It can be a challenge to find the coins on the secondary market, as current eBay auctions highlight. Expect the uncirculated sales figures to jump more than normal in next week’s report.

In terms of weekly sales, Julia Tyler First Spouse Gold coins were again leaders. The US Mint placed the $10 commemoratives on sale Thursday, August 6. As of Sunday, August 16, collectors purchased 2,087 proof and 1,125 uncirculated — a weekly respective increase of 548 and 295, or a gain of more than 35% for each.

The First Spouse Gold Coin Price Guide has been updated to include the proof and uncirculated coins honoring First Lady Julia Tyler, which the United States Mint launched Thursday, August 6, 2009.

The price guide includes:

  • The latest US Mint sales figures for each First Spouse Coin
  • The latest US Mint prices for all First Spouse Coins
  • The intrinsic value of the gold within each coin
  • The difference between a Mint’s coin price and its intrinsic value (in $ and %)
  • Links to US Mint product pages for each coin
  • Link to the First Spouse Coin page offering information on the coin and a brief biography of the First Lady
  • For coins no longer offered by the US Mint, links to current eBay auctions

The guide also includes an adjustable gold spot price which drives the coin pricing grid. While a modern collectible gold coin’s intrinsic value should not be used to judge its numismatic worth, knowing the value of gold within a coin is nevertheless insightful.

First Spouse Coin Sales Figures logo The demand for First Spouse Gold Coins leaned lower over a seven day period ended Sunday, August 2.

That latest stats from the United States Mint show declining sales for seven of the eight gold coin offerings when compared to the prior week. Anna Harrison’s gold piece was the sole option to rise, gaining a modest 35 over the prior 27. The new total is 2,511.

Letitia Tyler’s proof coin provided the most noticeable change within the group. It topped 3,000.

Speaking of Tyler coins, Julia Tyler coins launch Aug. 6. (Julia was John Tyler’s second wife following Letitia, who was the first wife of a president to die while her husband was still in office.) The series should get fresh eyes and possibly better sales. Recent higher gold prices coupled with unchanged First Spouse coin prices may help as well. Each coin contains one-half ounce of .9999 fine gold, which is an intrinsic value of about $483 using Wednesday’s closing gold price.

Letitia Tyler First Spouse Coins went on sale July 2. Both options have declined in demand — a mostly normal occurrence when several weeks have passed since launch. The proof Anna Harrison was the other coin to slide, with 56 new coins sold compared to the previous 58. Jackson Liberty’s proof was the gold coin that remained unchanged with the same 60 additional sold. The uncirculated option was a leader in the First Lady series, gaining 48 over the prior 15.
