First Spouse Coin Sales Figures logoIt’s no surprise the newly offered Sarah Polk coins were again the best sellers of the First Spouse Gold Coin series. The proof and uncirculated options rose by 216 and 463, bringing the totals to 1,137 and 2,147 respectively.

Overall, however, First Spouse Coin sales mostly declined compared to the prior report, with only two of the ten U.S. Mint gold commemoratives showing improvements. The Letitia Tyler First Spouse uncirculated coin rose by 75 compared to the prior weekly gain of 65. Van Buren’s Liberty uncirculated climbed by 74 compared to last week’s 71.

As something to keep in mind, with gold’s recent rise above $1,000 an ounce, a new threshold in the Mint’s pricing policy has been touched. Should gold prices average above $1,000 between Thursday and next Wednesday, First Spouse Gold Coin prices will increase by $25. The last price increase happened on September 2nd, when gold moved above $950 an ounce.

A precedent seems to be emerging in the purchasing patterns of the First Spouse $10 gold coins, especially against the background of the last three releases, Letitia and Julia Tyler and the Sarah Polk coins. In the Thursday 7/2 to Sunday the 5th of July 2009 time period, 1,853 Proof and 1,020 Uncirculated L. Tyler coins were purchased, 2,873 in that first week of issue. The combined sales of all First Spouse gold coins, reported on July the 8th, were 3590 units. This sales total was enhanced by the unexpected sales of 504 Proof Louisa Adam coins, as it was widely suspected that the sales of the latter coin was to be suspended with the new issue of the L. Tyler coin. The combined market value of all First Spouse gold coins sold during this first week of issue of the L. Tyler coin was $2,244,252.

In the following reporting period of 22 July 2009, the combined sales of all First Spouse gold coins during that two week interval was 743 units. During which time, the sale of the Louisa Adam’s coin was indeed suspended. This steep drop-off in sale, in the first following weeks after the release of a new coin, demonstrates a First Spouse gold coins sales trend that has been repeated again and again in the last six months.

In the 4/2 time period, there was a net lost of minus 77 First Spouse gold coins sold before an improvement to a plus 627 sales in the 6/10 interval before slipping back to 265 units in the 6/17 time period and 205 units the next 6/25 time frame.

These sales figures were of course revived with the release of the L. Tyler coins on 7/2/09 and the reporting of 3590 units sold on 7/8/09. Nevertheless in the reporting interval of 7/22, with the long expected suspension of the L. Adam coin as a given fact, the combined sales of all First Spouse gold coins were 743 units. In the 7/29 time frame the sales slipped to a combined total of 600 units with a slight peak sale of 108 of the A. Jackson coin, the second most numerous in sales, in expectation of a suspension of their offering. However, with the Jackson coin still on board, sale slipped again, in the 8/5 week, to 408 First Spouse gold coins sold.

On Thursday, August 6 with the introduction of the Julia Tyler issue, by Sunday, August 9 some 830 Uncirculated and 1,539 Proof coins had been sold, a total of 2369 units. The reported sales of all First Spouse gold coins in the 9/12 time period were 3003 units. With the A. Jackson coin yet in the mix, the combined market value of all First Spouse gold coins sold during this time frame was $1,875,107.

In the following week 8/19 some 1464 units were sold, in the week of 8/26 about 1102 units were sold and in the week of 9/2 sale had slipped to about 690 units.

Sales were again revised with the initial release of the Sarah Polk coin on Thursday the 3rd of September. By the 9/9 reporting period 2605 coins of this new issue had been sold. This following a mint price increase to $641 from $616 for the Uncirculated coin, 921 new issue units sold, and an increase to $654 from $629 for the Proof issue with 1684 new issue units sold. The combined sales of all First Spouse gold coins, reported in the 9/9 time period, were 3426 units with a combine market vale of $2,224,705.

In the 9/16 time period combined sales of all First Spouse gold coins again slipped to 1291 units. If the low sale trend line continues, it is expected that in the 9/26 week some 800 or so combined First Spouse coin sales will be reported. Furthermore if the increase in price is indeed a major deterrent to sales, as it might be assumed, even far fewer than the 800 units sold can be expected to be reported in this weeks totals. We shall see what we see!
