The latest US Mint sales figures showed a return of First Spouse Gold Coin popularity. 943 new sales were recorded since the last set of data was given two weeks ago. (Last week’s figures were not released, and the US Mint headquarters was closed four days due to a couple of major snowstorms.)
The sales surge was expected since the Mint reduced gold coin prices on Jan. 27. On the other hand, the unexpected was the coins that took top sales honors. Anna Harrison’s Uncirculated was most popular, gaining 177, and Letitia Tyler’s Uncirculated hit 2nd by adding 163. Rounding out 3rd place was Margaret Taylor’s Proofs, picking up 144. Normally the newest coins or the Proof versions would be in first place. Perhaps Harrison’s Uncirculated was successful because its sales will likely end around March 4 when the 2010 Abigail Fillmore First Spouse Gold Coins launch.
A few more notables emerged from the sales data. Margaret Taylor’s Uncirculated still hasn’t recovered its all time high sales figure of 1,733 from three weeks ago. It took a hit of -235 in the beginning of February and only grew by 127 to reach its current total of 1,625. One more interesting note was Sarah Polk’s Uncirculated jump of 103, making the new total 2,437. The interesting part? It’s only 41 away from Julia Tyler’s Uncirculated total of 2,478. Usually newer coins don’t catch up with older coins until after the older coins are no longer available from the Mint.

Normally, when US First Spouse Gold Coin prices drop, sales go up. That was not the case this time. According to the latest United States Mint sales data, First Spouse coin sales took a nose dive. Overall sales retreated by negative 188. Last week’s overall was (positive) 240.
This report showed a triple digit adjustment on the Margaret Taylor Uncirculated coins, -235. The Proof version was not much better, dropping back -59. Perhaps the gains made on the Jan. 17 sales data for the Taylor coins, 320 and 261, were the object of the returns, cancellations, or accounting corrections.
Coin prices fell $25, from $729 to $704 for the proofs and $716 to $704 for the uncirculated on Jan. 27. The last time the Mint cut prices was Dec. 16. The following sales report later showed improvements.
On the bright side, the most sought after Spouse coin was the Letitia Tyler proofs, adding 19 and reaching 4,672. In second place was the Sarah Polk proofs, climbing 17 to arrive at 4,118 total.

Sales slowed for seven of the ten available US First Spouse Gold Coins, according to the latest Mint sales data. In fact, the overall sales were the lowest for the month, sliding all the way to 240. Last week’s overall was 733.
While the previous report showed triple digit increases for both Margaret Taylor coins, 320 for the Uncirculated and 261 for the Proofs, this week Taylors’ only rose by 38 and 85. The two coins that improved compared to last week were the Letitia Tyler Proofs, adding 21 versus the prior 16, and the Anna Harrison Proofs, gaining 20 over the prior 17. Julia Tyler’s Uncirculated stayed the same with a weekly increase of 8.
Perhaps collectors were anticipating today’s price drop of $25, since the spot price of gold started to decline last Wednesday. The U.S. Mint lowered gold coin prices today to $704 for the First Spouse Proofs and $691 for the Uncirculated because the London Fix weekly average fell under $1,100.00. (See coin price grid.) The last time the Mint cut prices was on Dec. 16.

Sales for US First Spouse Gold Coins jumped again, according to the latest United States Mint sales figures. The surprise was certainly the Margaret Taylor gold Uncirculated, which skyrocketed by 320. Last week its change was just 97. It even beat the Proof version, which gained 261. That’s not too shabby considering last week was 152.
First Spouse new coin sales totaled 733 in all, beating the prior 407. The Margaret Taylor coins were the only individual coins to increase by three digit figures. Older Spouse coin gains were relatively small, in the lower double digits and below.
The surge was hard to foresee. Sometimes it occurs before a price change or a new coin launch. The price of gold, however, has been hanging out in the same range, so United States Mint numismatic gold coin prices have not changed since mid December. Also, the next First Spouse Coin to be released, Abigail Fillmore’s, will be on March 4, which is another six weeks from now. Perhaps collectors were simply ready to invest in the low mintage gold series, or there was a large single order from a reseller.

The latest US Mint sales figures show another week of First Spouse Gold Coin improvements — at least in total numbers sold. New sales totaled 407 in all, beating the prior 330. Most of the individual gains were relatively small, except for one.
The standout was clearly the proof Margaret Taylor gold coins. They jumped another 152 to reach 2,557 since their launch on Dec. 3, 2009. The uncirculated version also performed well, adding 97 compared to last week’s gain of 45.
Julia Tyler proofs edged out Sarah Polk proofs by only one. They earned 28 and 27 new sales, respectively. Each of their uncirculated coins, coincidentally, tied with 23.

US First Spouse gold coin sales began the new year with improved figures, the latest United States Mint stats reveal. Eight of the ten gold coins improved, while one was lower and another’s increase was the same as reported last week.
Margaret Taylor proofs sped the quickest in this round with 110, and her uncirculated claimed 2nd place at 45. The poorest performer was the Letitia Tyler uncirculated coin. Only nine sold compared to last week’s 20. Julia Tyler’s proof gained 22 for the exact match previously mentioned.
Two proof options climbed into new sales territory. Anna Harrison’s reached 6,000, and Sarah Polk’s topped 4,000. Both have a ways to go before reaching the 7,000 sales range set with the 2008-dated proof coins.

Post holiday US Mint sales figures were a little frightful, since only a few more than one hundred First Spouse Gold Coins were added. The total sold was 113, compared to last week’s 506. Needless to say, these coins were not on many collectors’ minds.
The most popular Spouse coins were the Proof Margaret Taylor’s, Sarah Polk’s and Julia Tyler’s. Each managed 46, 25, and 22 respectively. On the opposite side of the spectrum was the Uncirculated Margaret Taylor coin. It declined by negative 15.
Perhaps the New Year will bring in more sales. Last week the US Mint 2010 Product Schedule was published as well as the 2010 First Spouse coin design images. Abigail Fillmore’s First Spouse gold coins will launch sometime in March.

First Spouse Gold Coin sales were slightly better this round than last, according to the newest US Mint Sales figures. The total sold was 506, compared to last week’s 479. One factor to help sales was the $25 price cut on December 16 for each coin.
Margaret Taylor coins roared above the others, which is typical of new releases. The Proof version increased by 241 and the uncirculated by 118, following the 217 and 82 reported last Wednesday. Julia Tyler Proofs commanded more attention than the Sarah Polk Proofs with 41 sold compared to Polk’s 29.
The US Mint today revealed the design images of the upcoming 2010 First Spouse Gold Coins. The new coins feature Abigail Fillmore, Jane Pierce, President Buchanan’s Liberty, and Mary Lincoln. More information for these coins will be available soon.

This week’s sales figures were a bit boring compared to last week’s report that included Margaret Taylor First Spouse opening sales figures. Then, a total of 3,158 Spouse coins sold. This week the total was 479. Still, that was better than November’s weekly average of 404.
Naturally, the star of the week was the new Margaret Taylor Proofs, leading the pack with 217. Taylor’s Uncirculated version was second, gaining 82. The third best seller was Sarah Polk’s Proof, climbing by just 36. Interestingly, Polk’s Uncirculated version came in last place out of ten, with just 5 being sold.
The US Mint lowered its gold coin prices today by $25. A Proof First Spouse coin is now $729 and the Uncirculated is $716. Prices went down because the Mint’s pricing policy is based on the London Fix weekly average price of gold, which fell below the $1,150 threshold that triggers cuts. The last price change — an increase — occurred on November 25.

Margaret Taylor First Spouse Coins launched on Thursday, Dec. 3rd, with somewhat of a bang, selling a couple thousand by Sunday, the latest US Mint sales figures reveal. 1,791 Proof versions and 1,048 Uncirculated versions were purchased. The new coins were more popular, beating the inaugural sales of the Sarah Polk First Spouse coins back in September, when 1,684 Proofs and 921 Uncirculated sold.
Demand for the half ounce 24 karat gold First Spouse coins has been on the rise in recent weeks, believed in part to be the result of higher gold prices, the lack of fractional sizes in other US Mint gold products, and the holiday season. The launch of a new coin in the series also dramatically increases sales.
The Mint stopped selling the 2008 Van Buren’s Liberty coins on Dec. 3rd, but no further purchases were reported for the period between the last sales figures, Nov. 29 through Dec. 3rd. The Van Buren’s did not perform as well as the 2008 Elizabeth Monroe or Andrew Jackson’s Liberty coins, but it did outperform the 2008 Louisa Adams coins.
