First Spouse new coin sales totaled 733 in all, beating the prior 407. The Margaret Taylor coins were the only individual coins to increase by three digit figures. Older Spouse coin gains were relatively small, in the lower double digits and below.
The surge was hard to foresee. Sometimes it occurs before a price change or a new coin launch. The price of gold, however, has been hanging out in the same range, so United States Mint numismatic gold coin prices have not changed since mid December. Also, the next First Spouse Coin to be released, Abigail Fillmore’s, will be on March 4, which is another six weeks from now. Perhaps collectors were simply ready to invest in the low mintage gold series, or there was a large single order from a reseller.
