The sales surge was expected since the Mint reduced gold coin prices on Jan. 27. On the other hand, the unexpected was the coins that took top sales honors. Anna Harrison’s Uncirculated was most popular, gaining 177, and Letitia Tyler’s Uncirculated hit 2nd by adding 163. Rounding out 3rd place was Margaret Taylor’s Proofs, picking up 144. Normally the newest coins or the Proof versions would be in first place. Perhaps Harrison’s Uncirculated was successful because its sales will likely end around March 4 when the 2010 Abigail Fillmore First Spouse Gold Coins launch.
A few more notables emerged from the sales data. Margaret Taylor’s Uncirculated still hasn’t recovered its all time high sales figure of 1,733 from three weeks ago. It took a hit of -235 in the beginning of February and only grew by 127 to reach its current total of 1,625. One more interesting note was Sarah Polk’s Uncirculated jump of 103, making the new total 2,437. The interesting part? It’s only 41 away from Julia Tyler’s Uncirculated total of 2,478. Usually newer coins don’t catch up with older coins until after the older coins are no longer available from the Mint.
