As a group, demand for First Spouse Gold Coins increased over the prior week, according to the latest United States Mint sales figures. Despite freshly high gold coin prices, collectors bought 558 compared to 452.
The proof Buchanan’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coin was the best seller, gaining 160 after zero was noted in the previous report. Second place went to the proof Margaret Taylor coins with 89 and then back to uncirculated Buchanan’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coins for third. Its sales total advanced by 77.
The days are numbered for the Margaret Taylor 24 karat gold coins. Thursday, December 2, at 12:00 PM ET is the Mint’s deadline to place orders for her coins, and then production will stop and any leftovers or returns will be melted. Once that happens, the secondary market will be the only place to find Taylor’s coins. As of Sunday, a combined total of 8,170 have sold, which is still behind the discontinued Sarah Polk’s combined coin mintage of 8,658.
Each Buchanan’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coin might be discontinued too, if their combined total reaches 15,000. It was 10,387 in the latest figures, which only leaves 4,613. They are actually the newest, having launched on September 2, 2010.
Sales of the Presidential $1 and Medal Sets remained abnormal for the second week in a row. Fans picked up 128 Buchanan sets, so it sold the most, as usual. But this time the second highest seller was not Pierce’s sets — it was Taylor’s sets with 91. Polk’s sets were 84 and Pierce’s sets came in fourth with 82. Last week’s results had the John & Julia Tyler sets changing by -318 and reducing their total from 10,077 down to 9,759.
