Both of the Jane Pierce First Spouse Gold Coins are no longer available from the United States Mint. In the early part of the month, the Mint marked the proof version as "sold out," and this week they did the same to the uncirculated Jane Pierce First Spouse Gold Coin.
If it seems early for Pierce’s coins to sell out, it is. As of Sunday, March 20, their combined total across all options did not equal the maximum mintage of 15,000. Instead, their total came to 8,334 or 55% of the (published) authorized issuance. Only 3,491 uncirculated and 4,843 proofs had been sold.
It is possible a large order had been placed for the remaining coins, but it is more likely that inventory of coins was limited based on demand expectations and no more were produced.
Traditionally, sales for one design would end when the authorized mintage was reached or the design had been on the market for about a year. Neither scenario was true in this case. The Jane Pierce First Spouse Gold Coins were released June 3, 2010, which was nine months ago.
In addition, an older coin in the series remains available. One of the Abigail Fillmore First Spouse Gold Coins is still for sale. Fillmore’s coins launched on March 18, 2010. Its proof version is still being offered, but its uncirculated version was designated "sold out" around the same time as Jane Pierce’s uncirculated.
On the obverse of Jane Pierce’s gold coin is her portrait, and the reverse shows Jane sitting in the visitor’s gallery of the Old Senate Chamber of the U.S. Capitol Building. The obverse was designed by Donna Weaver and sculpted by Don Everhart. The reverse was designed by Donna Weaver as well but sculpted by Charles Vickers.
As of this writing, there are now only four First Spouse Gold Coins available from the US Mint.
