The proof Jane Pierce First Spouse Coin sold out late last week, according to the United States Mint’s website. The uncirculated Jane Pierce gold coin, however, is still for sale.
This makes the second time the US Mint has recently removed a First Spouse coin’s availability before its mintage reached its published limit. The earlier one was James Buchanan’s Liberty Proof Coin which sold out in early February.
The US Mint launched the Jane Pierce coins on June 3, 2010, and set a limit of 15,000. As of Sunday, March 6, 2011, her proof hit 4,852 and her uncirculated was 3,274. Thus, their total equaled 8,126, or 54% of the maximum mintage that was first defined by the Mint.
The reason for the early sell out has not been announced. Both Jane Pierces coins had been selling well for the last several weeks, but the uncirculated was rising twice as fast as the proof version. In the latest four rounds, 197 proofs sold compared to 410 uncirculated. This report’s increase was 24 for the proofs and 36 for the uncirculated.
As for the remaining available coins, Fillmore’s uncirculated was the clear winner of the group, with a gain of 103 compared to 30 previously. At the same time, her proof version took a nose dive of -15. In the last round, her proof coins had risen by 16. Such a dramatic swing in sales is not typical considering the Mint may suspend the sale of Fillmore’s coin as soon as they launch the 2011 Eliza Johnson First Spouse Coins. They released Fillmore’s coins nearly a year ago on March 18, 2010.
Mary Lincoln’s proof option was the second best seller, climbing by 93, and Buchanan’s uncirculated Liberty coin took third after growing by 84. Lincoln’s uncirculated followed with an addition of 43.

The sales figures for the Fillmore coins do not match with your comments in the body of the article. Which is correct? Also can you tell me where to find these sales figures on the mints web site. I have tried and cannot find them.
Ernie, thanks much for the comment. The Fillmore proof and uncirculated figures were reversed in the body of the article, and have been changed to show the correct numbers as indicated in the grid. The U.S. Mint provides our parent company, CoinNews Media Group LLC, with updated sales figures once a week.
