The US Mint stopped selling James Buchanan’s Liberty First Spouse Proof Coins earlier this week, even though their latest sales total was 7,317 as of Sunday.
Only 4,461 of the uncirculated version had sold by Sunday, which means the combined total for both of the proof and uncirculated Buchanan’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coins was 11,778, or 78% of the maximum 15,000 mintage the US Mint had first announced.
As of this writing, the uncirculated are still available on the US Mint’s website. For whatever reason, the Mint halted proof sales early. A sell out under a pre-announced mintage limit has happened in the past for a coin, but it is a rare occurrence.
Despite a slowdown in the prior sales report, James Buchanan’s Liberty proof coins surged by 226 in the most recent round of weekly sales figures. Previously, only 43 were scooped up by collectors.
Mary Lincoln’s proof coins were the second highest seller, picking up 124, and her uncirculated version took third with 69. James Buchanan’s Liberty uncirculated coins advanced by 35.
In fact, all but one the 24-karat gold coins outperformed their previous weekly gains. Jane Pierce’s uncirculated added 17 versus 18 in the last round. A total of 558 were purchased by coin enthusiasts compared to 274 in the last one.
Even more popular was the Lincoln Presidential $1 and First Spouse Medal Set, which catapulted by 465 and topped the 10,000 marker. In the prior week, it had jumped by 387. Its new total winded up at 10,371. The older sets were not as hot. James Buchanan’s medal set dropped in demand, rising by only 48 compared to 58 previously. Pierce’s set improved just a little, by climbing by 27 versus 26. Combined, 560 sets sold compared to 495 in the last report.
