Ironically, the US Mint raised gold coin prices just yesterday, as gold has been on the upswing during the last several days. And with that, it’s important to remember that Sarah Polk coins and the other collector gold coins can change in price from week to week depending on the performance of gold. (See US Mint pricing policy for an explanation.)

Sarah served as First Lady to James Polk, eleventh President of the United States. The US Mint provided the following background information:

Sarah Childress Polk received an education traditionally available only to the most privileged young women of her time, which made her especially fitted to assist a husband with a political career.

She devoted her married life to husband James K. Polk’s political career, organizing his campaigns, writing speeches, handling his correspondence, and developing a network of valuable political friendships.

Skilled in tactful conversation, Mrs. Polk enjoyed wide popularity and deep respect. She instituted many changes at the White House, including its refurbishment and the installation of gas lighting.

Phebe Hemphill designed and sculpted both sides of the coins. The obverse or heads side shows a portrait of Sarah while the reverse has Sarah and her husband President James Polk working diligently in the White House.

The coins are the 4th released in 2009 and 12th in the series which began in 2007 to commemoratives and honor former American First Ladies.

Each is struck at the US Mint’s West Point facility, an bear the ‘W’ mintmark. The coins are composed of one-half ounce of .9999 fine gold with a diameter of 26.49 mm and a thickness of 1.88 mm.

They may be ordered directly on the United States Mint Web site:
