Jane Pierce First Spouse Gold Coins Opening Sales

Collector interest improved for First Spouse Gold Coins this past week, according to the latest round of United States Mint figures. All of the coin sales were up, despite the continuing higher coin prices as a result of record level gold prices.

The brand new Jane Pierce coins were the hottest. They went on sale last Thursday, and by Sunday 1,579 proofs and 855 uncirculated sold. Combined, their total reached 2,434. Their start was down, however, from the Abigail Fillmore coins launch which totaled 2,881.

When the Pierce First Spouse Gold Coins launched, four coins were discontinued by the US Mint. They were the Letitia Tyler and Julia Tyler proof and uncirculated options. Their final numbers ended much lower than prior coins in the series. The Julia Tyler uncirculated became the most scarce. Only 2,861 were purchased up by collectors in the one year they were on sale.

In getting back to new sales, the remaining three sets — Abigail Fillmore, Margaret Taylor, and Sarah Polk — all enjoyed higher numbers versus the previous week. Abigail Fillmore proofs gained 81, compared to the prior 54, and Margaret Taylor proofs advanced 38, compared to the prior 22.

All together, 2,668 First Spouse coins sold. In last week’s report, the total was -41 because the Margaret Taylor uncirculated declined by -249 due to a Mint adjustment.
