in Mint Sales Figures

First Spouse Coin Sales Figures logoDemand for First Spouse Gold Coins marginally declined last week, while the newest Jane Pierce First Spouse Gold Coins remained the most sought after in the series. Of the 918 sold, 449 were Jane Pierce proofs and another 164 were Jane Pierce uncirculated, the latest United States Mint sales figures reveal. The previous spouse coin total had been 975.

Half of the eight available first lady coins performed better than the prior week. The four higher were the Margaret Taylor proof and uncirculated, the Sarah Polk proof, and the Abigail Fillmore uncirculated. The biggest jump went to the uncirculated Margaret Taylor gold piece. In this report the gain was 48 compared to its prior weekly increase of 21.

One thing helping gold coin sales during the traditional summer collecting doldrums was the higher fluctuations of the price of gold. The U.S. Mint uses the average weekly London Fix gold to determine whether a First Spouse coin price change is necessary. On certain days last week, gold was above $1,250 an ounce, but it was not enough to move the average above that mark and thus trigger another price hike for the Mint’s numismatic gold products. (The price for the coins remained $779 for the proofs and $766 for the uncirculated. The last price change occurred on May 12.) Record gold created some media attention, however, which helped American gold bullion coins, minimally, and at least made the first lady coins appear a little less expensive.

It seems when gold makes the news, buyers pay more attention to this series despite the fact that they are collector intended coins rather than investor driven U.S. Mint products (like bullion American Eagles and bullion American Buffalos).

Gold prices have hit several records this week, which should make for some more interesting sales figures to report next week.
