First Spouse Gold Coin Prices Drop, Buchanan Liberty Leads

The latest First Spouse Coin news starts with two major developments, prices dropped today for United States Mint gold coins, and Buchanan’s Liberty First Spouse coin sales lead the pack.

Each First Spouse coin has lowered in price by $25. Proof versions went from $854.00 to $829.00, and the uncirculated ones changed from $841.00 to $816.00. The new price updates took affect late this morning, on Wednesday, January 26, 2011. The US Mint’s pricing policy requires price readjusting of collector gold coins based on the weekly average of the London Fix gold prices.

The average fell below $1,350 an ounce, and Wednesday’s PM price did too, which is why the US Mint made the change to the half-ounce First Spouse coins as well as the one-ounce American Buffalo Proof Gold coins, who’s price fell $50. If London’s weekly average moves outside the $1,300.00-$1,349.99 an ounce range, then prices could change again. As of late, Buchanan’s Liberty coins have been hotter. Sales for both catapulted by triple digits in this round. The uncirculated was most popular. It jumped by 127, and the proof surged by 110. As of Sunday, its combined total struck 11,442, which is 76.3% of the maximum mintage.

In total, the First Spouse coins outperformed last week’s numbers 437 to 262. The same did not happen for the Presidential $1 and First Spouse Medal Sets, however. The top performer was the Abraham and Mary Lincoln Set with 343, but that was down from 732 previously. In fact, all of the sets were down. Only 462 sold compared to 916 in the prior round.
