in Coin Prices

First Spouse Gold Coin and other United States Mint numismatic gold coin prices are teetering on a new record high, since market gold average prices have climbed above $1,350.00 an ounce several times in the last few days. The US Mint’s pricing policy bases its gold collector coin prices on the London Fix average weekly price of gold as well as a directional component — the Wednesday PM gold Fix price.

Since the London Fix weekly gold average has jumped above the current $1,300.00 to $1,349.99 per ounce range — presently sitting at $1,366.56 an ounce, the Wednesday PM price is set to be the indicator of whether prices are headed up or down.

If Wednesday’s AM price — the final number used in the weekly average — is above $1,217.45 an ounce, and the PM price is above $1,349.99 an ounce, then the US Mint will raise First Spouse Gold prices by $25.

It is easy to predict that the AM price will be above $1,217.45. The last time it was in that neighborhood was on August 13, 2010. Plus, a drop to that level would require a significant event to rattle overnight markets. However, gold did plunge on Tuesday, placing prices well within the current Mint’s pricing range of $1,300.00 – $1,349.99 range. (London gold fell $28.75 and later closing U.S. gold futures prices for December settled at $1,336 an ounce, down $36.10). So the question is, what will tomorrow’s bullion prices be, and most important, what will be the PM gold Fix?

Below is a chart of the past few days of the London Fix’s AM and PM prices. Note the drop in today’s PM price.

Day AM GOLD PM GOLD
Thursday, the 14th $1,380.75 $1,373.25
Friday, the 15th $1,377.25 $1,367.50
Monday, the 18th $1,359.75 $1,367.25
Tuesday, the 19th $1,367.75 $1,339.00
Wednesday, the 20th ? ?

Proof First Spouse Gold coins are now $829, and the Uncirculated is at $816. If a price change is warranted, the new prices would be $854 and $841, respectively. In the past, when the US Mint had to adjust the price, they did it before 12 noon ET Wednesday. They also briefly froze ordering of the First Spouse coins right before the change was made.

In addition to the First Spouse gold coins, there are six more Mint offerings that would be affected, listed in the table below.
