Prices Rise, Johnson Presidential $1 & First Spouse Medal Set Appears

Lower prices were short lived. Gold trended back up, so the United States Mint increased prices for First Spouse Gold Coins on Wednesday, May 25, back to the highest level seen in the series. The one-half ounce 24-karat gold coins are $929 for each proof and $916 for each uncirculated.

Pulling in the highest sales were the Eliza Johnson coins. During their second full week of availability, collectors bought 135 more Johnson coins than they did in the prior round. 440 proofs and 276 uncirculated coins were purchased, most likely while the prices were lower, versus 366 and 215 previously.

Only one of the Mary Lincoln coins outperformed its prior sale’s gain. The proof version jumped by 62. Last time, only 21 moved. Collectors scooped up about the same number of uncirculated issues in the two rounds, 31 in this one and 33 in the last.

Although the Andrew and Eliza Johnson Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set launched on May 10, the US Mint just announced its opening number in this round. After 12 days on the market, 2,362 sold. As a comparison, 7,447 of the Lincoln sets sold in its first 12 days, but then again, almost anything with a Lincoln coin has proven very popular for the US Mint.
