First Spouse Coin Sales Figures logoIt has been 22 weeks since the United States Mint last released new First Spouse Gold Coins, but the long wait did not improve the debut sales of the Eliza Johnson Coins. Die hard fans of the series picked up 2,108 of them between their launch on Thursday, May 5 and Sunday, May 8.

Eliza Johnson’s inaugural figures were slower than several recent releases, as the table below demonstrates. Mary Lincoln and Buchanan’s Liberty issues both did exceedingly well during their debut, while Johnson’s was less than half of either of them. Perhaps the record high price of gold put a damper on the enthusiasm a debuting coin usually experiences. Proofs are currently $929 and the uncirculated are $916.

Coins Launch Date Proof Uncirculated Inaugural Total
Eliza Johnson May 5, 2011 1,333 777 2,108
Mary Lincoln December 2, 2010 3,635 1,870 5,505
Buchanan’s Liberty September 2, 2010 3,641 2,486 6,127
Jane Pierce June 3, 2010 1,579 855 2,434
Abigail Fillmore March 18, 2010 1,057 1,824 2,881
Margaret Taylor December 3, 2009 1,791 1,048 2,839

The launch did not help the three remaining available coins’ weekly sales gains. None were able to top their prior week’s performance. Mary Lincoln’s proof added 66 and her uncirculated rose 33, versus 78 and 47 previously.

Abigail Fillmore’s proof was taken off Mint shelves when Eliza’s coins appeared but not before 25 were added to the total. It certainly was not a spike like those that sometimes occurred in the final days of older coins in the series. As it stands, 6,145 proof and 3,489 uncirculated Fillmore coins sold, which totaled 9,634 in all.

There was one more adjustment in the Buchanan Liberty uncirculated coins that were taken off the market in mid-April. His uncirculated total slid down another 3 in this round to 5,350.

As for the Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Sets, each one finally increased. The Lincoln set took the most with a jump of 284 after remaining static for two weeks, and Buchanan’s advanced by 109. Pierce and Fillmore’s sets improved by 10 and 20 respectively.
