There have been a few extreme peaks and valleys when it comes to First Spouse Gold Coin sales trends, and this round is no exception. The latest United States Mint sales data showed 117 cumulative sales for the coin series, compared to -350 and 968 in the prior two reports.
The winners in this round were the Mary Todd Lincoln Coins. They took over the top two spots for the first time in weeks. The proof Mary Todd Lincoln rose by 61 and the uncirculated Mary Todd Lincoln by 37. Their combined overall total came to 8,519 or 56.8% of their maximum allowed 20,000.
Buchanan’s Liberty uncirculated is still available, and it’s figures increased by 33 to take third place. Previously it lost -418 and before that it catapulted by 493. When combined with its sold out proof version, its tally is still hanging out at 83% of its published maximum of 15,000.
Since the Jane Pierce coins are no longer available and their totals remained unchanged, the only gold coins left are the Abigail Fillmore options. Even though the uncirculated option is sold out, its total was adjusted by -1. Her proof version, which is still for sale, was also reduced. It fell by -13.
Demand for Presidential $1 and First Spouse Medal Sets eased during the week. The Lincoln set climbed 105 following a 113 improvement in the prior report. Buchanan’s set, which surged by 68 previously, advanced by only 20. Pierce and Fillmore’s sets rose even less. In all, 144 sets sold versus 229 in the last round.
At this time, the US Mint has not indicated when it plans to release the first 2011 First Spouse Coins. Those coins will honor Eliza Johnson.

What is going on with the US Mint First Spouse coins? They are say sold out but the maximum number of coins has not been reached (15,000). I placed an order for an Abigail Fillmore MS on 3/17/11 and received a confirmation and then a backorder email from the Mint on 4/4/11 saying expected to ship on 4/19/11. Then I checked the Mints web page order status and my order say no longer available. No email saying order was cancelled or anything.
I read an article saying the Mint has lost something like 25% to 33% of its customers. Does anyone wonder why?
I hear speculation that the series may end early…or that they may go to a 1/4 ounce coin (vs. 1/2 ounce). It seem odd that (just as we get a new Mint Director) coins are selling out early and new coins aren’t being released.
Does anyone know what the future holds for the First Spouse series?
