First Spouse Coin Sales Figures logoEven though five out of the eight available 24-karat gold coins beat the previous week’s gains, overall sales were lower by 3 — 307 compared to 310. The medal sets were worse. Together they climbed 357 after jumping 610.

Jane Pierce First Spouse Gold Coins held the majority, with 121. The proofs added 77 and the uncirculated climbed 44. The prior week’s numbers had been 59 and 18 respectively.

Last week’s highest performer, Sarah Polk’s uncirculated, slowed to 30 this time after gaining 99. Its proof version also picked up 30, which was higher than 28 previously.

The Sarah Polk coins will only be available from the Mint a few more weeks, if they discontinue the oldest coin when they launch a new one. The Buchanan’s Liberty First Spouse Coin launches in three weeks on September 2, 2010. So far, 4,965 proof and 3,265 uncirculated Polk coins have been purchased, which beat the totals of Julia and Letitia Tyler coins.

At this time, prices for the available coins in the series remain at $754 for the proofs and $741 for uncirculated versions. The last price change was on July 21 when prices fell $25.

Sales dropped by half for the Franklin & Jane Pierce Presidential $1 & First Spouse Medal Set. 203 sold in a week’s time vs 409 in the last round. All of the dollar & medal sets, in fact, had lower sales. The Fillmore set went from 83 to 52.

Thank you. The Mint did lower the mintage this year, and they are 15,000. The page for the Buchanan Liberty has been updated.

The mint publishes the date that they will START selling each of the First Spouse coins, but when do the Mint STOP offering each coin in the series? Does the Mint limit their FS offerings to only the last four issues in the series at any one time, or might the Mint just keep selling all of them for years and years?
Thank you.

Dave, the Mint has no official policy, nor has it published when it will discontinue each coin. However, almost without exception , the Mint has stopped selling the very oldest coin listed in its online store the morning before it releases the newest one. For example, when Buchanan’s Liberty coins goes on sale Sept. 2 at noon ET, expect the Mint to stop offering the Sarah Polk coins around mid-morning on the same day.
