Collectors jumped at the opportunity to pick up the new 2010 James Buchanan’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coins and the other available coins in the series. The latest United States Mint figures revealed sales were higher across the board. Presidential Dollar and First Spouse Medal Sets, though, did not experience the same kind of demand.
Over 7,000 First Spouse coins sold during the week, with Buchanan’s Liberty coins taking up 6,127 of them. The new Liberty only went on sale Thursday, September 2, and by Sunday 3,641 proofs and 2,486 uncirculated were snatched. The start was much higher than many recent releases. Each of the last four launches came in under 3,000 total.
Abigail Fillmore’s and Jane Pierce’s uncirculated were the next biggest sellers. The Mint let loose 235 and 153 of them, while the coins with the lowest gains were Margaret Taylor’s and Abigail Fillmore’s proofs at 40 and 89 respectively.
When the Mint launched the gold pieces featuring Buchanan’s Liberty, they removed the 2009 Sarah Polk coins, but not before selling 106 uncirculated and 97 proofs. The latest statistics showed a total of 5,157 proofs and 3,501 uncirculated were claimed by collectors. Polk’s coins had been on sale since Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009.
The Presidential $1 and Medal Sets had tough time compared to the previous round. Just one out of the five sets managed to beat its prior gains, and that was the John and Julia Tyler Set. It moved up 26 versus 24 previously. Still, the best selling set was the Franklin and Jane Pierce Set. It advanced 157.
Later this month, Buchanan’s Presidential $1 and Medal Set will be released (September 23).
