Across the board demand for First Spouse Gold Coins slowed following the sales spike from the previous week, the latest United States Mint figures revealed. Even though all eight gold coins advanced by double digits, 348 of the gold coins sold versus 568 in the last round. Interestingly, the uncirculated gold pieces sold more than the proofs for a third straight week.
The frontrunner of the series was the uncirculated Fillmore coin for a second week in a row. It rose by 86, but that was far from the prior round’s 133. Next was Jane Pierce proof coins, at 81, and its uncirculated version, which gained 51. Previously they had climbed 90 and 94, respectively.
The Sarah Polk coins did not experience a last minute surge, considering they were expected to be removed from the Mint’s lineup as soon as the new 2010 James Buchanan’s Liberty gold coins launched on September 2. (They were, in fact, taken off sale late Thursday morning.) Only 30 proof and 17 uncirculated Sarah Polk versions sold. The uncirculated was the least selling coin of the bunch for the week. The latest totals showed 5,060 proofs and 3,395 uncirculated were claimed by collectors.
The Presidential $1 and Medal Sets had one standout in the report, the Pierce set. 211 sold compared to the next best seller, which was the Fillmore set at 84. Overall sales were slightly slower, 383 versus 386. Sets sell for $11.95.
As a reminder, the Buchanan’s Liberty Bronze Medal launched at the same time as the new gold coins. The 1 and 5/16" medal sells for $5.50. The Buchanan Presidential $1 and Medal Set will be released on September 23.
