First Spouse Sales Mostly Jane Pierce – Gold Coins and Medals

In this week’s United States Mint sales data, every First Spouse Gold Coin slowed. Retreating sales is common in the fourth week following a new coin launch, but this time the weekly increase was less than half of last week’s. Only 413 of the 24-karat gold pieces were purchased, following 918 previously.

Jane Pierce proof coins continued their high-stepping march above the older coins, bringing in 196 in new sales. All others stayed in double digit figures. Its uncirculated version, of course, was next in line, adding 76. Together, the Jane Pierce coins took up 65.8 percent of all new sales in the series.

The Franklin Pierce & Jane Pierce Presidential $1 & First Spouse Medal Set debuted last Thursday the 24th, and by Sunday they hit 1,340. This launch was not quite as strong as Fillmore’s dollar and medal set, which was 2,362 right after its release on Friday, March 26, 2010. The summer months, however, have typically been slower for collector sales.

In gold news of the day, spot gold fell below the $1,200.00 an ounce barrier on Thursday, plunging more than $45 for the day and after closing out a quarter where it soared 12 percent. The $1200 mark is important for the First Spouse coins series. If average prices remain below the level for a sustained time (between Thursday AM and Wednesday AM), it will trigger a $25 price reduction in each first lady coin.
