First Spouse Gold Coin Sales Tumble, Prices Increase Again

First Spouse Coin Sales Figures logoIt’s quite possible higher prices provoked a major blow to First Spouse Gold Coin sales after last week’s figures had almost doubled. In fact, sales hadn’t declined this much in over a month. How bad was it? The latest US Mint stats have the total at only 133 versus 785. All of the 24 karat gold coins slowed.

Even though the figures showed double digit movement, not all were gains. Two coins, Julia Tyler uncirculated and Letitia Tyler uncirculated both lost significant sales, -28 and -69 respectively. The two most popular purchases were Abigail Fillmore’s proof and uncirculated. Each added 55 and 47, but last week’s numbers were 135 and 72.

Prices look to be a factor. Due to the rising market price of gold, the U.S. Mint had to increase First Spouse gold prices again this week, to an all-time high record for the series. The proof versions are $779, and the uncirculated are $766. The last increase was on May 5th. It seems there is not much to keep the spot price of gold from rising, since investors are turning to gold while the euro and dollar appear volatile.

The Mint finally announced it’s launch date, June 3, 2010, for the 2010 Jane Pierce First Spouse coins. They will be the second set of new releases this year. With that, the Letitia Tyler coins’ availability is limited. In this collector series, it’s been the Mint’s practice to let the oldest go when the newest is introduced. At the current rate, Letitia’s coins will not achieve final mintage figures as high as the prior Anna Harrison or Van Buren Liberty coins.
