First Spouse Gold Coin Prices Rise, Grant Sales Spike

As gold trended up in the precious metals market, First Spouse Gold Coin prices had to rise on Wednesday, July 20, 2011. The $25 jump moved the prices to the highest seen in the series. The 24-karat gold one-half ounce coins are now $954 for each proof and $941 for each uncirculated.

Many collectors timed their purchases before the price increase, and sales ending on July 18 outperformed the prior week 923 to 376. Leading the pack was the Julia Grant proof coins with 388 compared to 213 in the previous round and her uncirculated version at 271 versus 132.

Eliza Johnson coins also experienced triple digit increases. The proof rose 116 and the uncirculated added 101. Previously each moved by -6 and 21 respectively. Rounding out the gold coins was the proof Mary Lincoln issue, which increased by 47 after putting on 16 in the prior round.

Most of the action, however, was in the Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set arena. The Ulysses S. Grant set opened on July 7 and by Monday, July 11, 1,569 sold. In this latest round, another 763 were scooped up. Johnson’s set came in second with 133 after gaining 193 previously.

Lincoln’s coin and medal set experienced a major swing in sales over the last couple of weeks. For the week ending July 11, it looked like the set catapulted by 5,063, but in this most recent round, its sales number was corrected by -4,946. In all, its total moved up 117 to reach 12,817.
