First Spouse Coin Sales Figures logoMost of the First Spouse Gold Coins shined brighter in the latest United States Mint sales report, by outperforming their prior weekly increase. Overall, 1,593 coins sold, compared to 1,479 previously.

Sales likely spiked right before the Mint raised their numismatic gold coin prices on Wednesday, September 15. Next week’s story may show much softer sales, since collectors tend to shy away while prices are at the highest for the series. Right now they are $804 for the proofs and $791 for the uncirculated. However, gold prices have been setting new records nearly every day, and that could increase demand even though the first lady coins are struck for collectors.

For the US Mint to change prices again, the London Fix weekly average of gold would have to move outside the range of $1,250.00 to $1,299.99 per ounce. That is because the US Mint’s pricing policy uses the London’s numbers as a gauge for the market. First Spouse coins are one-half ounce 24-karat gold.

Earning the top two spots for most sold were the 2010 James Buchanan’s Liberty Gold Coins. 607 proofs and 562 uncirculated sold, but the proofs were the only coin in the series that did not exceed the prior weeks sales. In the previous round, collectors wanted 780 proofs. Still, Buchanan’s Liberty coins combined total reached 8,568, or 57.1 percent of the allowed maximum 15,000 mintage.

The next best seller was Abigail Fillmore’s uncirculated, with a gain of 104. Jane Pierce’s uncirculated came in last place. It advanced by 47, which is below the coin’s six-week average of 75.

Another 247 Presidential $1 and Medal Sets sold, which is slightly lower than the previous round. The Franklin and Jane Pierce Set was the champion, as usual. It added 77. Most likely, this was its last week at the top, because Buchanan’s Presidential $1 and Medal Set launched September 23. Typically a set will sell over 1,000 after the first weekend and another 1,000 after the first week.
