It has been one week since the US Mint stopped selling Buchanan’s Liberty First Spouse Proof Coins, but instead of seeing big numbers in the most recent United States Mint data to explain why they "sold out," their total dropped back -3. It went from 7,317 down to 7,314.
In the meantime, Buchanan’s uncirculated Liberty coins surged by 113. Perhaps the proof’s unavailability spurred the sales. The new total for the uncirculated moved up to 4,574. Altogether, 11,888 of the published 15,000 maximum mintage for the Liberty design have been purchased.
Surprisingly, the best seller in this report was Jane Pierce’s uncirculated coins with 131. The last time they increased in the triple digits was early November. As for Mary Lincoln’s coins, they slowed more than usual. Her proofs rose 45 and her uncirculated picked up 27 compared to 124 and 69 in the prior week.
As a whole, demand weakened for First Spouse Gold Coins following the higher sales performance from the previous week. The Mint’s stats showed 381 were purchased versus 558.
Soon, Abigail Fillmore’s designs will be taken out of the lineup. It has been the Mint’s practice to discontinue the oldest coin when launching a new one. Fillmore’s have been on the market since March 18, 2010. The next in the series will be the 2011 Eliza Johnson First Spouse Coins. The Mint has not published their launch date as of this writing, but if tradition holds, they should be released sometime during the first quarter.
Prices of First Spouse gold coins increased by $25 on Wednesday, February 16. The proofs are now $854.00 and the uncirculated are $841.00. The change was due to the US Mint’s pricing policy, which allows price adjustments based on the market price of gold.
