It has been a while since more than 500 First Spouse Coins sold in a week, but it finally happened. Collectors took 568 of them, according to the latest United States Mint figures, compared to 159 in the previous week. Seven out of eight coins had double digit movements, while one sold more than 100.
The uncirculated Fillmore First Spouse Gold Coins advanced by 133, which was a complete turnaround from its prior movement of -42. The proof version rose 44, after ranking last place with a -44 in the previous round.
Jane Pierce coins were the other big movers. The uncirculated gained 94 and the proof picked up 90. Even Sarah Polk’s uncirculated surged in this round, adding 77 to its total after growing by just 36 previously. Overall, the uncirculated were more popular than the proof versions, beating them 367 to 201.
The price hike on August 18 probably contributed to the sales comeback. Collectors who were watching the London Fix spot price of gold rise likely knew ahead of time that the Mint would change First Spouse coin prices, and so they made their purchases. First Spouse coin prices rose from $754 to $779 for the proofs and from $741 to $766 for the uncirculated versions.
Two new First Spouse one-half ounce 24-karat gold coins will launch next week. The proof and uncirculated versions of Buchanan’s Liberty will debut on Thursday, September 2. It has been the Mint’s practice to discontinue the oldest available coins just prior to the new coins’ release, which in this case will be Sarah Polk’s coins.
