Yesterday, September 23, 2010, the United States Mint launched the 2010 James Buchanan Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set for $11.95, plus shipping and handling. The set is the third for 2010 and the sixteenth released in a series that honors both former Presidents and First Ladies.

Buchanan Presidential Dollar & First Spouse Medal Set
The set includes an uncirculated dollar coin featuring Buchanan and a bronze medal bearing a likeness to his Liberty First Spouse Coin. Since Buchanan never married, an image of Liberty was used.
Phoebe Hemphill designed and sculpted the obverse or heads side of the Buchanan Presidential Dollar. The coin bears an image of James Buchanan with the inscriptions "James Buchanan", "In God We Trust", "15th President" and "1857-1861." Don Everhart designed and sculpted the reverse image of the Statue of Liberty. It has the inscriptions “United States of America” and “$1.”
The obverse of the 1 5/16 inch bronze medal features a reproduction of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagle designed by Christian Gobrecht. It was the image of Liberty that circulated on coins during the time Buchanan was president. The reverse shows a young Buchanan working as a bookkeeper in his family’s small country store. It was designed by David Westwood and sculpted by Joseph Menna.
The set is available on the Mint page:
