Van Buren’s Liberty First Spouse gold proof coin topped the 6,000 marker, although sales of the gold coin actually declined from the prior week.
Worse, five of the eight US Mint sold First Spouse Coins experienced reduced sales — a turnaround from our last report where seven showed improved week-over-week gains.
The semi reversal is not without explanation. Gold prices were on the rise and forced a $25 price increase on June 3 for each coin — a non helpful event for the series.
Standing out from the crowd were the Anna Harrison gold coins. The uncirculated coin jumped 5.1 percent higher (110 more sold) from the prior figures while the proof increased 4.2 percent (185 additional sold). The other gainer was Jackson’s Liberty uncirculated coin — ironically, the coin in last week’s report with the weakest numbers.

[Editor's update: The article was corrected to properly indicate Anna Harrison First Spouse Gold Coins led in sales. When first published, the article incorrectly stated the stand out coins were the Louisa Adams.]

Your commentary on the sales of first spouse coins for the week ending the 10th of June states that “again standing out from the crowd for the second straight week were the Louisa Adams coins. The uncirculated coins jumped 5.1% higher (110 more sold) from the prior figures while the proof increased 4.2% (185 additional sold).
Yet the table that follows, comparing the prior to most recent US Mint sales data, shows the sales total attributed to the Louisa Adam coins rightfully belong to the Anna Harrison First Spouse Coin Sales.
Such a rotation of sales leadership from the longer available Adam coin, soon to be discontinued, to that of the newly arrived Harrison coin, makes for even a better story. The rush to purchase the Lousia Adam coin seems to indicate either a lagging interest in the First Spouse Coin series as a whole or a group of bottom-feeders, anticipating a low mintage (less than 4000 issued) modern coin, wetting their beaks.
On the other hand, if the figures in the table tell the real story rather than the commentary, then maybe the First Spouse Series is drawing more attention from the general public than is common knowledge. In any case at least the Series is getting some attention for whatsoever the reason.
With those highly attractive Tyler spouses, Letitia and Julia waiting in the wings to make their appearance on center stage and the good looking Sarah Polk at the ready, this Series still has a real chance to have it really going-on.
Or is it that these $10 (.9999 pure 1/2 oz.) gold collectors coins are the only game in town. He’ll soon be able to see more clearly what these latest sales figures are trying to tell us!
Alvin, thank you for identifying the problem! The table was correct and the commentary incorrect when it stated Louisa Adams First Spouse Coin led in sales. We’ve fixed the mistake.
