US Mint Launches Letitia Tyler First Spouse Coins

2009 Letitia Tyler First Spouse Gold Coins in proof and uncirculated condition were launched Thursday by the United States Mint for the price of $629 and $616, respectively.

The $10 denominated, 24-karat gold coins are the tenth commemoratives released in a series to honor American First Ladies.

The obverse, or "heads," side of each coin features a portrait of Letitia Tyler designed and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. The reverse, or "tails" side, was designed by Susan Gamble and sculpted by Norm Nemeth. It depicts Mrs. Tyler and her two oldest children behind their Cedar Grove Plantation, where she and John Tyler, the 10th president of the United States, were married in 1813.

Each coin includes the "W" mint mark, denoting minting at West Point, weighs 1/2 ounces, has a diameter of 26.49 mm, a thickness of 1.88 mm and is composed of .9999 fine gold. A mintage of 40,000 is set across both the proof an uncirculated option. (Also see First Spouse Gold Coin Specifications.)

Prices of the coins may change weekly based on the weekly average of gold. Bronze medals bearing a likeness of the gold coin is also available for $3.50.
